Welcome to the South Western Road Club.

We are a friendly cycling club based in South West London with a membership of over 100 cyclists.

The active heart of the club is our Saturday club ride with a rotating three monthly list of the planned destinations, which take in the roads and lanes of Surrey, Sussex and Kent. There are also midweek rides and in the summer months an evening ride (chain gang) prior to our weekly Tuesday club night held in the Chessington area.

You are welcome to try us out on a club ride or a visit to our club night. Use this site to find out more about us and some of the things that we do in the Club.

SWRC ‘May Flyer’ Cyclosportive – Sunday 31st May, 2009 9.00am

Finishing times for this event can be found here....

Apologies for delay in publishing the finishing times but we've had some minor tecnical difficulties updating the site.

We had great weather again this year and plenty of praise from riders in the event. Thanks for your emails its great to get your feedback, some of which we have reproduced below.

"Just a quick note to say thank you for last weekend’s May Flyer sportive, I was very impressed with the organisation, clear signing of route, feed stations and of course the helpful and welcoming volunteers. I will be sure to recommend it to others for next year."

"I just wanted to thank the SWRC and all those involved for hosting a really well organised ride yesterday. Everything ran very smoothly from registration to cakes at the finish. With Powergels etc thrown into the entry, it must be the best value sportive in the UK. Having now down this for two years in a row and enjoyed the lovely sunshine on both, I'll look forward to next year"

"Just a short note to say thanks to all the organisers for making the event yesterday such great fun. It was a pretty route, the weather was superb (I gather this is now becoming a tradition) and I was made to feel most welcome throughout. Nice to join an event that hasn't 'gone commercial' like many other sportives which seem to be turning into money-spinning events for the organisers"

"Just a short note to say what a great sportive you ran yesterday. My first May flyer and a great route and good feed stations. All this for a good price. Look forward to next years"

"Dear SWRC, thanks again for another fantastic randonee. My friend ... realised that he'd broken his seat post this morning, so we didn't get to the start until 10.30 and missed sign on. However, we rode the long course and loved every minute of it"

Saturday Club Rides - Improved C group

We now have a well established “C Group” for the Saturday rides in order to provide an opportunity for club members and new riders to join a ride at a more modest pace and distance than generally undertaken by the A and B Groups. Start is at 0930 at Cobham car park, as for the other groups, allowing people to choose their ride on the day.

As with the other A & B groups the C group also starts from Betchworth on the first Saturday of each month. Distance will generally be 40-45 miles at a pace that keeps everyone together and avoids the steeper hills.

A tea stop is also scheduled for each ride to keep energy levels up! The club runs list shows the destination, so all you have to do is turn up at the start. We want members to spread the word once they have tried the ride and it will become the ride of choice for those looking for a more relaxed outing. Come and give it a try! .

CHAIN GANG!  CHAIN GANG! CHAIN GANG!

Clocks go forward on Sat. 28 March and the first Chain Gang of the 2009 season will be on Tues. 31 March and every week there after from March to September. Meet at the clubhouse for a 6.45pm start. You will need lights for the first 3 or 4 weeks.

The ‘chain gain’ is a race training ride where a group of riders are riding at or near their limit in a single file ‘through and off’ rotation. The chain gang ride is about 30 miles (or one and a half hours duration). The groups are limited to about 4 to 6 riders, so the more riders that turn up, the more groups set off. Participants join the most appropriate group according to their level of fitness and ability.

SWRC Paul Third at Hillingdon Winter Series

Paul Alderson consistent results throughout the winter months saw him take third overall in the E/1/2/3 category of the Imperial RT Winter Series at Hillingdon Circiut. Talking after the result which saw him move up to a 2nd Cat he said he wanted to get his 1st Cat licence by the end of the year and then mabe Elite after that, not a bad ambition for a man who just joined the over 40's. Go Paul!

La Marmotte 2008 Cyclo Sportive

Five SWRC members entered this year's La Marmotte. It’s a 174km / 110mile sportive that starts in Bourg d’ Oisans and goes over some of the most famous climbs in the Alps. The first 95miles is a clockwise loop over the Col du Glandon, Col de Telegraph and the big one, the Col du Galibier, before finishing up the Alpe d’Huez. With around 6000 riders from all over Europe competing, it makes this one of the most treasured events to take part in.

Paul Alderson writes....

After hearing about La Marmotte a few years ago, and its rating as the toughest one day event for amateur cyclists I'd been keen to give it a go. With Trevor's fantastic organising, before I knew it I was entered and the date was okayed by my (always) very accommodating wife. By the time the big weekend arrived, I'd completed over 7700km's of training and racing - my longest training ride being a 224km solo to Bognor Regis and back into a fierce headwind - the distance wasn't going to be my downfall. But with only the Surrey Hills as my training hills, the big mountains were an unknown factor. My weight, due to all my time trailing, and trying not to snack too much, was 5kg less than the start of the year, so that should be a help in the mountains. Also, after riding my De Rosa almost into the ground over the last 8 years, and it having always had a problem with downhills, (I've experienced quite a few speed wobbles on it over the years, so I wasn't feeling exactly confident about descending the Galibier on that bike.), an investment in a new bike was in order.

I bought a Planet-X bike, dura-ace equipped and with deep section carbon wheel, very light AND it had a compact chainring - which I would usually turn my nose up at, but for the mountains I had seen many times on the telly during the tour and after seeing pros riding them during the Giro this year, I thought it was probably a very good idea. Our trip out to Vizelle was spent almost entirely driving in the rain,(which didn't help to settle any nerves), and although a long trip, Alan's continuous chatting and his podcast collection kept me well awake, added to this the banter between Tango Lima and Mike Papa, meant that we arrived feeling pretty good.
