ROAD RACING

South Western Road Club participates in the bike racing arena in Surrey which is one of the most active in the country. The Surrey Cycle Racing League organises over 100 races through the season, catering for all classes of rider from semi-professional elites to the rank amateur 4th category, including women and juniors. For veteran riders (age 40+), the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists also organises a full calendar of races, with riders racing in one of the five age categories as appropriate.

Using a variety of circuits on public roads and on private property (e.g. Goodwood), races range from 30 mile handicaps to 180km events, and from flat courses to hilly loops taking in the local climbs. There are season-long points competitions, special ‘White Jersey’ series, and even a few stage races.
Many of our members take part in both Surrey League and LVRC races and recent seasons have seen our members taking wins and yellow jerseys in many categories. SWRC also organise two Surrey League and two LVRC races, the latter including the divisional championship, as our contribution to the calendar of events.
As part of their training for events such as those mentioned above, during spring and summer, many SWRC riders take part in an Tuesday night ‘Chaingang’, a hard ride of approximately 30 miles from the clubroom.
Newcomers to the club are welcome to take part in these activities. Our Road Race Secretary Mark will be only too pleased to provide help with applying for licences and choosing suitable events and our clothing secretary will be able to provide club racing kit. Entering events you will, more often than not, have several team mates on the start line with you. |
